HKUST Summer UG Research Program

Eligibility

  • Full-time undergraduate students enrolled in institutions outside of Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and Mainland China.
  • Have completed at least 2 years of study by the start of this program
  • Exceptional academic record with demonstrated potential and passion in research
  • Exchange partners are welcome to nominate exchange students to count towards the exchange balance or fee-paying students
  • Students must be age 18 or above by the start of the HKUST Summer UG Research Program

Students with Nomination

For students from

HKUST’s Exchange Partners

HKUST accepts nominations from exchange partners for student participation as Exchange Student or Fee-paying Student. If you are student of the below categories, please follow the application steps below:

  1. Your home institution is a HKUST exchange partner ; AND
  2. You are nominated by your home institution to the HKUST Summer UG Research Program either as Exchange Student or Fee-paying Student

Seek Nomination from Your Home Institution

Students from HKUST’s Exchange Partners should seek nomination from the study abroad office of your home institution.

Check with your home institution for their internal procedure, eligibility requirements and timeline. Home institutions can email HKUST (summer.school@ust.hk) to submit nominations. The nomination period is 15 Nov 2025 - 5 Feb 2025.

Remarks: Applications are processed on a rolling basis. Interested students are encouraged to contact your study abroad office and seek nomination as early as possible. Exchange Partners are encouraged to nominate students early for wider research project selection.

Complete HKUST Online Application

After HKUST receives and reviews your nomination, we will contact you to provide details on application procedures, and guide you to complete the HKUST online application.

Students are required to submit the following documents in the online application:

  • Latest academic transcript issued by the home institution
  • A personal statement explaining your academic background and why you are interested in joining the selected research project(s)
  • Resume
  • If the language of instruction at your home institution is not English, a proof of English proficiency is required. Students are expected to satisfy HKUST's English Language Admission Requirement 
  • Passport copy

Submit Student Visa Application

  • Most international students will require a student visa .
  • Complete the visa application documents and courier the documents to HKUST by 20 Mar 2025.

Offer Acceptance

  • Students may be required to attend a zoom interview.
  • HKUST will notify you of the admission decision together with your research project enrollment results in early Mar. Successful applicants are required to accept the offer by settling the fees  before the payment deadline (i.e., 17 Mar 2025).

 

For students

Without a Home University Nomination

If you are in either one of the below categories, please follow the application steps below:

  1. Your home institution is not a HKUST exchange partner ; or
  2. Your home institution is a HKUST’s exchange partner, but your home institution is unable to nominate you to the HKUST Summer UG Research Program

Submit Initial Application

Submit the below documents to summer.school@ust.hk to indicate your interest in joining our program before 5 February 2025:

Complete HKUST Online Application

After HKUST receives and reviews your nomination, we will contact you to provide details on application procedures, and guide you to complete the HKUST online application.
